The Brief DVD is a new video created to inspire,
educate, and motivate anyone interested in the world of
Industrial Design.
Four Professional Industrial Designer's were asked to
design a single cup coffee maker. They were not given
any guidance as to what the coffee maker should look
like, or how to design the product. They were also
asked to video tape themselves while going through
the process of translating their ideas from their head to
a finished concept.

Wednesday 15 September 2010           New Product Development Process

I have been asked many times what The Brief DVD is about. In short, it shows new product develop process in action. The interesting thing about a creative process, is that there is rarely a straight path to the end. What started out as an experiment within The Brief DVD, actually turned out to prove what I have seen over and over again to be true. Every designer, while taught the same basic principles of how to create a product, each one has a their own twist on the same process.

Within The Brief DVD vol 1, four designers are given the same basic task. And very quickly, you see each of the four designers head off into their own new product development process.

There are two very distinct things that can be learned from observing the diverging paths of different designers:

1. As someone trying to learn how to go through an industrial design process, that there are many ways to skin the cat. You can taylor and hone your skills in many ways in order to become a professional designer. Creativity isn’t bound by a single path to a solution. It is both what makes it fun, and frustrating at the same time. What I hope aspiring designers to take from this is a way to build your own confidence by watching others, emulating what they do, and then modifying to fit your personality.

2. Someone who is trying to manage a new product development process can also learn a lot from this kind of lesson. I argue that it requires a very special mind to be able to harness the looseness of this kind of process. It can’t be bound by linear thinking. Truly unique spins on old product themes come from the ability to focus a creative team through proper product and brand definition. Combine that with the ability to distill details out of rough sketches, or even design accidents, into something that is far more deep and meaningful. Trying to turn a qualitative process like the design of a product into a quantitative box is an accident waiting to happen.

While The Brief DVD doesn’t provide a straight line for a new product development process, it does provide insight – if looked at with the right lens – in to how you can harness the power of a creative team to do some amazing things for your next product development process.

Tuesday 6 April 2010           Just Keep Sketching

Spencer Nugent, one of the designers showing off their skills in The Brief DVD, runs a website over at www.idsketching.com that everyone interested in industrial design should check out. One thing that he has been doing that everyone as a designer should be doing, is sketching every day. Even if it is just a quick thumbnail sketch to fire the sketching neurons…nothing helps your sketching ability more than practice.

Thursday 3 December 2009           A Kind Plea…

Living in the digital age comes with many truths.  One of them being that if you create a DVD and publish it to the world, it is going to be ripped and posted to the Torrents and Usenet Groups.

While I understand that this is inevitable, I would like to put out a kind plea to anyone that is purchasing The Brief DVD for the purpose of posting it for free distribution: This is a self-funded project.  All the time put forth for the creation of this DVD has been volunteered by the Designers, Editors, and Musicians involved.  Any money that is made is being split between all parties involved.

Please, if you are posting The Brief DVD for free, I am asking kindly that you don’t so that the hard work put out by these people is not overlooked.

Thank you!
